Why do we, Absorb cbd choose to put our Topical Relief and our Sublingual formulas in an oil base? Why not a lotion? Why not a gel? There are a few reasons why we choose oil even though most consumers are used to lotions or “oil free” formulas. The most important reason is, the delivery vehicles. As you may have read by now, Absorb cbd takes great pride in retaining the precious essential oils in our CBD extracts. These essential oils are the delivery vehicles of cannabinoids and they possess their own medicinal properties. Lucky for us essential oils work like keys in a lock in various systems of our bodies, and therefore possess their own delivery vehicles. This is the first line of delivery, but coming in a close second are another set of small but important molecules known as, essential fatty acids. When essential oils are applied with essential fatty acids, they are capable of travelling deeper into the skin and can even reach the blood stream. In order to do this the oil must pass the epidermis, go thru the dermis and undergo a process called hydrolysis. Generally, the thinner the oil the better which is why heating up oil in the palms of hands or in an oil burner is an even better way to apply oil based medicines.
First of all, let’s just remind ourselves of the simple fact that your skin is there to protect your insides. It is not supposed to let things in, and it can and does let toxins out through sweat glands, if they are overloaded in your system. In general, it is designed to be pretty impermeable by most things. Contrary to popular belief, moisture is not absorbed thru the skin. It is created from the inside and by the time moisture reaches the surface layers of your skin it is a very volatile molecule called “natural moisturizing factor”. Hot water can deplete your natural moisturizing factor (yes those long hot showers are very drying to your skin and you would be wise to drink more water to replenish your moisture levels). That’s right water is NOT completely absorbed thru the skin. Dry lips are the first sign of dehydration, and while lip balm feels good, it is not actually replenishing moisture. Your top layer of skin is called the stratum corneum. This means it is made of proteins that are designed to be a barrier. This barrier is no thicker than a piece of paper or some strands of hair. That is pretty strong for being so thin! The skin inside the mouth is a mucous membrane and has a physiology all its own. We will talk a bit about permeation of both.
Our outer skin cells are surrounded by a lipophilic substance we create called sebum. Sebum refers to our own natural oils that we produce, which themselves have a lipid bilayer, thus enabling small lipidic molecules to pass the stratum corneum by finding their way around and through the cells. Essential fatty acids do this with great ease and efficacy. This means that Absorb cbd’s oil based products will penetrate faster and have a high probability of bringing the active ingredients to their proper channels within our bodies. Given our return client rate, this is a proved theory.
Every vegetable oil known is made up of fatty acid chains. Some long, some medium, some short, but they are all fatty acids. Fatty acids are a type of lipid. Lipids generally refer to oil based substances or something that is lipophilic is soluble in oil. Cannabinoids and essential oils are highly soluble in oil. CO2 extracts are predominately oil soluble in their rawest form, known as a “Total”. Totals contain all the waxes (which are also completely oil soluble), essential oils, and other lipophilic substances such as flavonoids. Certain components are alcohol soluble such as cannabinoids and essential oils, waxes are not alcohol soluble. For vape pens most companies wash their extract with alcohol to dissolve the cannabinoids and essential oils, then strain it to remove the waxes, a process incorrectly referred to as “winterization”. After all, waxes are hard to vaporize and usually clog up the small heating coils generally found in today’s vape pens. However, the waxes of CO2 extract generally contain free radical scavengers, work as protective agents, and contain essential oils and active components. Cannabis waxes generally still contain cannabinoids and essential oils among other things. Our topical relief formula uses 5 types of CO2 Total: Cannabis, Calendula, Arnica, Turmeric, and St. John’s Wort. This means that all of those extracts are predominantly oil soluble.
Not all waxes are created equal. Beeswax and most of the cheap synthetic emulsifying waxes used in skin care to make lotions today are much larger molecules than the waxes we are talking about in CO2 extracts. The whole point of a lotion is that it is oil emulsified with water, then preserved because anything with water will form bacteria and eventually fungus if not preserved. Ewww right! Before the cosmetic industry existed (few hundred years ago and on back to the beginning of time), each country and continent had more than a few plants with oil bearing fruits, seeds, pods, nuts, and berries. Most of these plants are still around today and we use them for cooking, and in cosmetic products to condition our skin, hair, and nails. There is also a lot of talk these days about the importance of making sure to get your share of essential fatty acids. This refers to nutrients that your body needs to function properly. Mal nutrition is not just lack of food in general, it is due to not getting the proper nutrients needed to function in the foods you are eating. It is possible to absorb some of these nutrients thru your skin, and essential fatty acids are included in that category. The outer layers of our skin (just after the stratum corneum) is comprised of lipid bilayers that can diffuse the nutrients thru to the papillary layer of your skin, which is where the blood vessels are. Conveniently, applying oils in general, especially those which contain essential fatty acids, will protect your skin from unnecessary “moisture” loss, and will condition the skin as it diffuses thru. Thereby leaving your skin healthier than before you applied the oil.
Let us recap why oils are amazing, and we insist on using them as a base for our products:
– We use Cannabis and other herbal CO2 totals in our formulations, they are completely oil soluble, therefore you get the most potent form of each extract.
– Oil acts as a delivery vehicle carrying essential oils, vitamins, and essential fatty acids that are all beneficial to the body and crucial to the efficacy of our formulations.
– Oil is readily absorbed by the skin, and conditions the skin along the way.
Beeswax based creams are the oldest in history. Once the industrial revolution hit, companies like Oil of Olay and Ponds were using petroleum based by-products like mineral oil and petroleum based emulsifiers and preservatives. Most of our generations are trained on using lotions and are quite lipo-phobic (we just made that up right now). Lotions contain larger size waxes which remain on the surface along with many of the other “active ingredients” they sold you on. Lotions also contain preservatives because of the water portion of the emulsion. Using pure vegetable oils eliminates the need for emulsion and preservation. For the record most oils will last 6 months to a year if stored properly (low temperature and out of the sunshine), the only danger with oils is oxidation. You can smell when an oil goes rancid and it’s not pretty, but it does take a good long time. Gels are water soluble and therefore also not nearly as capable of penetrating the skin without some other chemical added to force absorption, they too need to be stabilized (usually with carbomer derived from car tires) and preserved (cheap standard preservatives can be incredibly toxic and carcinogenic, but some of the newer natural preservatives safer). We like the complexity of our formulas to be in the combination of natural ingredients used, we want you to know that the entire formula is made of therapeutic strength ACTIVE ingredients, not a host of inactive, inert, and unnecessary emulsifiers, stabilizers, and preservatives.
Now for a bit about the base oils we chose. For a more in depth listing of the properties of each ingredient please go to our products page and click on the ingredient you would like to know more about. Absorb cbd products are typically an amber-orange color, this is due to the most nutrient rich and important vegetable oil we use, called Seabuckthorn oil. This oil is a very dark dark orange, and we get it wild crafted all the way from the Himalayas, a very spiritual and special place. Seabuckthorn oil is native to China and has been used for thousands of years. There is oil from the seed and oil from the berry, both can be cold pressed or CO2 extracted
